About Us
St. Louis Insight Meditation Group
was founded in 1996 to support the understanding of Mindfulness through the
Theravadan Buddhist practice of insight meditation (Vipassana) in the St Louis area. We are a lay
group offering a weekly meditation group, classes, retreats, a donated library,
and community (sangha) Our
emphasis is on the practice of mindfulness for the lay person.
Dana -- In accordance with the 2,500 year old Theravadan Buddhist tradition
we do not charge for these teaching but rely entirely on donations (dana).
Dana means "generosity" in Pali. The practice of dana is the
foundation of mindfulness and cultivates a calm and spacious mind. Dana
also supports the relinquishing of self centeredness and supporting
openheartedness which is central to mindfulness practice.
Metta -- Metta is the practice of kindness. We regularily lead
metta meditation and practice with the intention of cultivating kindness
towards ourselves and others. The mature mindfulness practice has the goal
of unconditional peace for all beings.
